Pyramid changes with a view to attracting business

KINGS and Queens of industry, your pyramid awaits...

But this impressive building will be no last resting place. It is poised to become a unique office development in the grounds of a North Yorkshire stately home.

The Pyramid Gatehouse, which spans the road leading to Castle Howard, is being earmarked for conversion because the estate, like other rural businesses, is keen to diversify.

The prestigious building and its stunning setting should attract a high-calibre employer who could bring much-needed business to Ryedale's rural communities.

Duncan Peake, estate manager at Castle Howard, said the plans for redevelopment at the distinctive gatehouse would offer a creative base.

"The original central part of the building was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh,

then the Victorians added wings to it," he said.

"It was built as a temperance inn - it was a hotel, but a dry one - then in the 20th century it formed part of a farm.

"The lady who has been there for the best part of ten years has decided to move out at the end of this year."

Mr Peak said they already had some planning consent for adjacent buildings.

"It's an extremely prestigious location, they are wonderful buildings," he said.

"It might suit a commercial occupier looking to move into this area, or someone already here."

The agent said about 20,000 sq ft would become available to whoever chose the gatehouse.

"The estate is diversifying - like many other businesses we have to look at new opportunities as farming and forestry are in decline.

"It would be very exciting if a major company came to the area, because they would in turn look at recruiting and providing employment."

Other business opportunities have already been created on the stately home's land.

Two years ago it began a project supported by Yorkshire Forward to create office space by converting traditional farm buildings, now open to businesses as part of the Park Farm Courtyard business complex.
