Village post office blow

VILLAGERS in a remote Ryedale village are to be left without a post office until someone is found to take it over.

Lockton post office will temporarily close on November 5 when Carol Brown, who has managed it for about five years, gives it up.

Post Office officials insist that residents will not be left in the lurch, and assure them they are moving quickly to find a replacement.

Rural transfer adviser Bill Earnshaw said: "There has been some local interest shown in the vacancy, and I will be pursuing this as a priority with the party concerned. We appreciate that the closure will inconvenience our customers, especially the elderly and those with disabilities, and my aim will be to restore services to the local community as soon as possible."

Chester Brown, chairman of Lockton Parish Council, said he understood someone in Lockton was keen to take up the sub-postmistress' s job.

Mr Earnshaw said he recognised the importance of the post office to Lockton's rural community, and said they were working to ensure the closure was as short as possible.
