RAF base plays host to Duke

STAFF at a North Yorkshire military base played host to the Duke of Gloucester as part of a private visit he made to meet Royal Air Force personnel.

The Duke spent yesterday at RAF Fylingdales on the North York Moors touring the base and meeting servicemen and women and their families.

Station commander Chris Knapman said the routine visit was one of a series of appointments the Duke, who is an honorary air commodore in the RAF, regularly undertook.

"He had an excellent visit and seemed to enjoy the visit a great deal," said Wing Commander Knapman.

"From my perspective it was good that we could have a visit from a member of the Royal Family.

"It's effectively welcome recognition of the work that we do here."

He added: "People are proud of what they do, so they are proud to be able to show it off to the Royal Family. He spent a great deal of time meeting them all and talking to them."
