College cross is installed

ENGINEERS today finally put up a 50ft cross at Ampleforth College.

The memorial cross, dedicated to the late Cardinal Basil Hume, was originally outside Westminster Abbey, but was due to be put up last week at its permanent North Yorkshire home.

Attempts to site the four-and-a-half tonne cross have been hampered along the way as first a helicopter and then a crane hit problems.

A Chinook helicopter failed to site the enormous cross because of adverse weather conditions.

And yesterday a crane due to arrive broke down on its way to the spot and was cancelled at the last minute.

A spokeswoman for the college and abbey said a crane had arrived today and was installed by engineers.
