MPs fight for A64 upgrade

TWO North Yorkshire MPs will set party divides aside to press for the upgrading of the A64 between York and Scarborough.

John Greenway, the Tory MP for Ryedale, and his Labour counterpart in Scarborough and Whitby Lawrie Quinn, will jointly lead a delegation from their constituencies to Whitehall to meet Transport Minister David Jamieson on July 2.

As reported in the Evening Press, pressure is growing for improvements to the vital link to the East Coast - from local businesses and councillors, and from Mr Greenway, who has arranged the meeting with Mr Jamieson.

Mr Quinn said at the meeting he would be seeking an update on a letter he received last month from Mr Jamieson.

In it the Minister said a "robust economic case" would be needed before any scheme to make the A64 a dual carriageway could go ahead, and such a study would be beyond the scope of the Highways Agency's current work to develop a Route Management Strategy for the road.

Mr Jamieson said the scope of such a new study would have to be carefully considered, and one similar to that recently carried out on the A1 in North Yorkshire "may be appropriate".

Mr Quinn added: "I am glad that colleagues from local government will also join us on July 2 to support the clear aspiration of the community and businesses at the Yorkshire coast for the much-needed improvement to the A64 corridor."
