Shop window for rural businesses

Message from Ryedale MP

John Greenway

THE cancellation of last year's agricultural shows because of foot and mouth disease was a huge loss, not just to the social life of our community but also to the financial fortunes of so many local rural businesses for whom the shows are an important shop window for their goods and services.

So, with the shows thankfully back in the calendar, I am sure that next week's Malton Show will be even more keenly anticipated than usual.

I greatly enjoyed being president of the show two years ago and wish Paddy Wrightson and the organisers under the meticulous direction of Mike Knaggs and his team an enjoyable and successful day.

It's disappointing that continuing foot and mouth precautions will deny us the opportunity of seeing the best of some of our livestock. Nevertheless there is much else to look forward to and let's hope for a fine day.
