Livestock back at Yorkshire Show

LIVESTOCK will be making a welcome return to this year's Great Yorkshire Show.

Restrictions enforced by DEFRA following the foot-and-mouth crisis mean no livestock can be on the show field for 28 days before and after the show.

At the Great Yorkshire Show, taking place from July 9 to 11, more than 1,500 livestock are expected.

Almost 30 breeds will be represented in the sheep section alone, making it one of the largest sheep shows in the country with 936 sheep. There will also be 475 cattle, 118 pigs and 210 goats.

A spokeswoman for the show said the reason they could go ahead with livestock was because the show had a designated ground and was not held on farmer's land. She added: "Implementing the bio-security measures has a cost implication this is something we are willing to take on board."

Show director Christopher Hall paid tribute to the many exhibitors who he said had pulled out all the stops to support the event.

He said: "Considering the traumas of last year we're absolutely delighted with the figures. With the support of our exhibitors and our on-going commitment to the industry the Great Yorkshire Show remains a superb platform for British farming."
