A-mazing

TRACKS are being laid in creating Britain's largest 'maize maze' on the outskirts of York.

Farmer Tom Pearcy is cutting three miles of paths into his field of maize at Ox-Close Farm, near Grimston Bar Park & Ride, to form the maze which he hopes to open to the public by the end of July.

It will take the shape of a Viking longboat, and incorporate the words 'York Maize' in 30 metre letters.

He said: "We've got to the stage where the maize is growing several inches a day and the paths have got to be cut now before it gets too big.

"At the moment, the design is on graph paper and we are using tractors to reproduce that design. It's proving to be a challenge, but we should have that done by the end of the week."

The maze is an attempt by Mr Pearcy to diversify his farming.
