Another show says no to livestock

HUBY and Sutton Show committee waited until the 11th hour before taking the decision already reached by many others shows to cancel their cattle, sheep, pig and goat classes.

At a committee meeting last week they reluctantly voted to cancel the classes due to restrictions imposed by DEFRA in the aftermath of last year's outbreak of foot and mouth. There are still some restrictions on farmers and in addition, DEFRA regulations state that there should be no livestock on the show field for a period of 28 days prior to and after the show.

Huby and Sutton Show chairman Harry Hogarth said: "The 28-day rule places a terrible strain on the tenant of the show field. To ask him to move his sheep for two months would be both inconsiderate and impractical."

The decision not to have livestock classes came too late for them to be omitted from the schedule, but the committee felt it was important that the show still be seen as an agricultural show and, all being well, livestock will be back in full force in 2003.

The show, now in its 111th year will be held in the beautiful setting of Sutton park, Sutton on Forest, Sunday July 28, and will host BSJA showjumping, Ponies UK and BSPS, pony showing, hunter classes, classes for local ponies and a gymkhana which is great fun for competitors and riders alike.

Classic cars and vintage tractors will be on show, together with a host of trade stands and a craft marquee. Cresta Dog Club will be organising a dog show and, for the first time, there will be a separate working terrier show and terrier racing. For lovers of style there is a horse driving class. The produce and hand-crafted marquee will have a variety of exhibits.
