Call to anglers to watch out for birds

BIRD lovers have appealed to Ryedale anglers to be more responsible for a second time, after ducks and swans in Norton pond were found to be caught on fishing line and hooks.

Jean Thorpe, who runs an animal sanctuary in the town, said anglers have been littering the pond with discarded equipment.

The Evening Press reported last month that children had stoned a duck to death.

"The article was very helpful because I think it has highlighted the issue," said Mrs Thorpe.

"We have had no trouble from children, it's just we still have a few anglers who do not clear up after themselves."

A swan on the pond was found in agony last week after a fishing hook and line had gone through its foot.

"We just want people to be aware that what is rubbish to them can be very dangerous for the birds on the pond."
