Harome come a cropper as Grayson smashes winning six

Ryedale Beckett League Division One: Harome 100 for 7 lost to Cropton 103 for 6 by four wickets

ON a damp pitch, Harome got off to a bad start with Jason Feaster capturing star player Dave Greenlay for six. It was left to Phil Marwood, who batted throughout the innings for a valuable 45 not out, to provide the backbone of the Harome total.

There were some good bowling performances for Cropton, Feaster finishing with 3 for 14, Craig Aconley 2 for 17 and Carl Suggitt 2 for 10.

Harome also got off to a good start with Kev Wilson being bowled by Strickland for one. Things went downhill for the hosts from that point, with a dropped catch and successive sixes.

Mark Aconley (36 not out) played the anchor role for Cropton. Needing six to win from the final eight-ball over, Greenlay beat the bat twice to leave Cropton needing three from three. Up stepped Andy Grayson and smashed the ball for six to end a well-fought match.

Graeme Strickland ended with 2 for 33 and Dave Greenlay a commendable 2 for 18.

Burythorpe 97 for 7 lost to Pickering 98 for 3

by seven wickets

The home batsmen were guilty of some suicidal running between the wickets as three of their team were run out. Only Paul Milner got into his stride as Burythorpe could manage just 97 from their allotted overs. Overseas player Joel Crosswell took two wickets for the Pikes, whilst Dan Broadbent, playing his last match before joining the Academy, conceded only 20 runs from his four overs.

A solid opening stand of 53 between openers Mark Shepherd (30 not out) and Colin Frank (34) in seven overs put Pickering in command as they chased their target. Good bowling from James Postill (2 for 26) and Brian Aconley (1 for 19) put Burythorpe in with a chance. Some late hitting by Chris Hugill (11 not out) and the dependable Shepherd eased the Pikes home with two balls to spare.

Kirkbymoorside picked up their first point of the season when their match at Malton and Old Malton was called off due to rain.

Division Two

Brawby 79 for 9 lost to

Nawton Grange 80 for 5

by five wickets

There was a turn-up for the books at Nawton where league leaders Brawby suffered their first defeat of the season.

On a wet pitch, Brawby, by their standards, gave a lacklustre batting display, with only Simon King (20) and Ady Pearson (23) showing any form. Nawton bowlers D Smith (4 for 13) and Justin Palmer (3 for 15) took the bulk of the wickets.

Nawton's opening partnership of D Smith and N Smith put on 53 to set them up for the win. There was a slight collapse once these two were out, which meant that ten runs were needed from the final over. But in Windress and Rymer, Nawton had the men for the job.

Division Three

Thornton-le-Dale 48 for 5

lost to Wombleton 49 for 5

by five wickets

Chasing Dale's total, Wombleton looked down and out at 8 for 5, but a rattling 32 not out from Nigel Johnson saw the home side to a win.

Johnson also did well with the ball, taking 2 for 3 and there was support from Anthony Walker (1 for 13) and Peter Wilson (1 for 12). Only John Newman (21) batted with any confidence for Dale.

Lee Oliver (2 for 7) and Stuart Hill (3 for 22) were the men who gave Dale a sniff of victory, until Johnson played that fine knock.

Westow 61 for 8 lost to

Malton and Old Malton 62 for 1

by nine wickets

Westow won the toss and chose to bat, but reached a disappointing score of 61 for 8. Frazer (23) was the only batsman to cope with the bowling of Dunning (3 for 11) and Dawson (2 for 7).

Dunning was also in form with the bat, making 22 not out, and, along with James Baxter (23 not out), saw Malton home.

Westow 135 for 5 beat Duncombe Park 106 for 8

by 29 runs

A hat trick by Earle (3 for 19) pegged Park back as they replied to Westow's fine total. Only Simpson (43) and O'Neil (21) contributed any reasonable score for the Helmsley side. Earle earned the man of the match award, having made 45 in Westow's innings. He shared a 94-run opening partnership with Kelock (58), which put the visitors firmly in the driving seat. Hayton strived hard for Park, taking 3 for 18.

Malton and Old Malton 117 for 6 beat Ryedale 107 for 3

by ten runs

Johnny Dunning (40) and Lester Parkin (38) batted very well and put Malton in a fine position. Andrew Hardey impressed for Ryedale, taking 3 for 22.

Ryedale lost two early wickets, but they were always in with a chance, thanks mainly to the efforts of Alan Brenkley (46) and John Smith (38). Towards the end, Malton's bowlers were just too strong, with Troy Dawson taking 2 for 20.

Heslerton's match against Duncombe Park was rained off.
