Bright idea lights up Jubilee celebrations

PENSIONER Peter Mooring brought a warm glow to Jubilee celebrations with the help of a Coronation light bulb.

The bulb was made 50 years ago, and has a 60 watt filament shaped in the letters ER below an outline of a crown.

"I used it once in 1952 to mark the Coronation but then I wrapped it in a sock and put it in a drawer," said 82-year-old Peter, from Welham Road, Norton.

"It stayed there for 50 years and I almost forgot it was in there until the preparations for the Golden Jubilee started.

"I wasn't surprised when I plugged it in and it lit up - it is British-made and very durable. It was made to last."

For the Golden Jubilee celebrations in Norton, Peter had a bright idea and decided to take it along to his local social club to put it on display.

It has become the centrepiece at the club.

"I bought it for 2/6d which was a lot of money in those days," said Peter, who ran a chip shop.

"It was the same price as a joint of meat, but I thought it was worth it because it was such a special occasion."
