Spook among the books

GHOSTLY goings-on have been spooking staff at Kirkbymoorside Library.

Staff are currently forging ahead with the future with a new set of internet computers, but the library is still maintaining supernatural links with the past.

The library has a friendly spirit which has been blamed for a few strange goings-on at the library, explained senior library assistant Rob Long.

"Staff have reported objects mysteriously disappearing and then reappearing," he said. "The friendly spirit has even been known to help a member of staff to find a missing book by throwing it onto the floor next to her."

The library was built in 1790 as a Literary Institute and sits on two stories - one of which is under ground level of the neighbouring graveyard.

"Although no one has seen the ghost, we are reluctant to dismiss its existence," said Mr Long.

"Our staff have always been known as knowledgeable, friendly and helpful souls, even the paranormal ones.

"I am not surprised that the prospect of more computers and improved communication facilities has raised spirits in the library."
