Rosedale reclaim top spot thanks to Barnes penalty

A WINNING goal from the penalty spot has put Rosedale back on top of the RJF Homes-Beckett Football League after Kirkbymoorside reserves had temporarily claimed top spot.

Rosedale took the three points in a hard-fought 1-0 win at Black Swan, Pickering. Rosedale were awarded a penalty when Les Barnes surged into the area and was brought down. Barnes sent the keeper the wrong way to put his side back on top. Man of the match for Rosedale was Adam Burkenshaw.

Kirkbymoorside reserves had taken over as leaders after a 5-1 win at a weakened Union Rovers. Rovers went two goals down early in the first half, as Philip Butler and Bobby Brewer notched, but Jamie Wilkinson pulled a goal back before half-time.

The Moorsiders took a firm grip on the game in the second half, scoring further goals by Dave Smith, Andrew Ferguson and Chris Hodgson.

Slingsby are fighting for their first division lives. In a game of two halves against Kirkdale, Slingsby scored twice in the first half, with goals from Darren Dyer and Carl Biggins. Kirkdale fared better in the second half as Philip Marwood reduced the lead.

Black Swan, Pickering are third after a 6-1 home win against Ampleforth on Friday. Swan got on top early when Craig Taylor scored after two minutes - direct from a corner. Simon Dale flicked on a Chris Weighell throw after six minutes for Steve Sailes to score with a close-range header. Both Taylor and Sailes added further goals before half-time to give Swan a four-goal lead.

Further goals were added by Sailes, and substitute Mark Wood before Ampleforth scored a late goal by Leo Wall.

A crowd of over 150 watched this match and the Royal Oak versus Duncombe Park game on the adjoining pitch at Lady Lumley's School.

Black Swan took the lead after 48 minutes when Steve Sailes scored with an overhead kick. Kenny Temple equalised five minutes later. Aislaby then took a 76th minute lead when Colin Frank's header found Danny Lamb, who scored with an unstoppable 18-yard shot.

In the 90th minute, Aislaby conceded a penalty and Steve Sailes kept his cool to send the game into extra-time.

The third minute of extra-time saw Sailes completed his hat-trick, his second in 24 hours, with a header. Five minutes from time, Aislaby equalised through a Colin Frank penalty to force a shoot-out.

Black Swan took the first kick, taken by penalty expert Kevin Wilson, who had brought himself on especially. But keeper Mark Fairweather saved superbly. Colin Frank scored Aislaby's first kick before Swan's Eddie Harris blasted his side's second over the crossbar. Kenny Temple also missed for Aislaby but then every other spot-kick was converted. Kian Brewster was the hero for Aislaby, scoring the last penalty to book his side a semi-final place against Pickering Royal Oak or Union Rovers.
