DE Lacy Motor Club were blessed with glorious sunshine for their Kall Kwik National Forest Rally on Sunday.
The sun was slightly deceptive however, as there was still plenty of ice around to test the competitors' skills.
For the first time, the club had secured use of Pickering market place for the start and finish of the event, and there was a definite carnival atmosphere about the place.
The rally was won by Richmond's Steve Petch in a WRC Escort, with Roger Duckworth from Towcester second and Riponian Rally winner Charlie Payne third in his Mitsubishi Lancer. York's Jonny Milner had been pushing Petch very close in his Celica GT4 before his transmission failed. Andy Elliot and Graham Wilcox had a 'nice steady run' to finish fourth overall.
Malton Motor Club members experienced a variety of mechanical problems during the rally. Possibly the most notable result was Tony Bardy finishing ninth overall in his Nissan Sunny, having broken down in Scotland during the Snowman rally the previous day before fixing his car and making a late entry with co-driver Mark Constantine.
Alan Richardson and Alan Ward managed to finish third in Class A in their 1300cc Nova (31st overall), despite a puncture sustained on the Langdale stage.
Pat Johnson and Graham Harper got off to a great start, recording the seventh fastest time on stage one in their Subaru Impreza WRX. Sadly, their hopes were dashed when they had an 'off' for 20 minutes on stage two at Cropton, during which time a dozen or so spectators tried to free the car from the mud and two troublesomely-placed trees. They would eventually go on to finish 38th overall.
Steve Magson and Geoff Atkinson suffered gearbox failure in Dalby and had to retire in their rear-wheel drive 2.6 Astra.
Terry Wilson and Graham Robinson's rally also came to an end in Dalby when their Mitsubishi Galant VR4 blew a head gasket.
A variety of problems plagued Paul Daniels and Donna Harper. First their starter motor engaged itself in mid-stage and burnt itself out, before a puncture and finally clutch failure forced them to call it a day.
Angus Waudby and Steve Bielby rolled their Mark II Escort right at the end of the Langdale stage, and Nicky Harper's Skoda engine seized when it ran out of water.
Finally, Steve Bannister's electrical problems were so bad that he couldn't get his Escort started on Friday, and had to withdraw from the both the Snowman and the Kall Kwik rallies. However, Steve was still their to witness his nephew John bring his Sierra Cosworth home in 23rd place on his debut.
The next event for local drivers is the Robin Hood Stages on Sunday, March 4.
