Beckett League roundup
FIRST division leaders Black Swan, Pickering suffered a 3-2 away defeat at Kirkdale United on Saturday in one of only four league and cup games played.
The other six were all postponed owing to waterlogged pitches.
Kirkdale United were good value for their well-deserved victory. They took the lead after three minutes when Ian Prendergast unleashed a 25-yarder which beat Black Swan keeper Kevin Wilson. This turned out to be the only goal of the first half with both sides missing good chances at the Pockley ground.
Black Swan equalised after 68 minutes when Richard Holtby cut in from the left wing and squared the ball to Richard Robinson who scored from three yards. Three minutes later Black Swan should have taken the lead when Richard Holtby broke through only to see his shot hit the woodwork.
Kirkdale United regained the lead after 78 minutes when Andy Knowles' shot was only partially saved by Kevin Wilson and Phil Marwood rushed in to make it 2-1.
Black Swan stormed back and equalised after 86 minutes. An excellent through-ball by Chris Weighell found Marc Dobson, who raced on and blasted the ball into the bottom corner.
As both teams went looking for the winner United were awarded a free-kick in the last minute. It was taken by Paddy Robinson, who flicked the ball on to Phil Marwood who rifled the ball past Kevin Wilson for a superb winner.
The second division saw leaders Ampleforth switch their game to Gillamoor with the game ending 1-1 a fine point for second place Gillamoor who were up for the game.
Andy Walshaw put Ampleforth ahead after 30 minutes and two minutes later Gillamoor equalised when Trevor Bainbridge scored a rare goal.
Cup Roundup
In the second round of the Ryedale Hospital Cup, Bagby and Balk were due to entertain Union Rovers, but upon arrival at Bagby and Balk's pitch the match referee decided the pitch was unplayable due to waterlogging. Union Rovers said their pitch was playable so everybody made the journey to Norton and played the game there, Union Rovers winning 3-1.
Jamie Wilkinson put Union Rovers ahead midway in the first half. Bagby and Balk drew level with a penalty by Chris Hindmarsh on the hour mark, but Union Rovers stormed back into the lead with a Nicky Jackson header after brilliant work by Nigel Allen down the right wing. Nigel Allen scored the third and final goal to put his side through to the quarter-finals and earn himself the man of the match award.
Second division Duncombe Park entertained Slingsby from the first division. Both sides are sixth in their respective divisions but the form book was turned around as Duncombe Park won their Gordon Harrison Memorial Trophy second round game 3-1.
Duncombe Park started well and were comfortably on top in the first half. They took a deserved lead after 30 minutes when a high looping cross by Will Smith found Kevin Mason who scored with a simple six-yard tap-in.
Before half time, Duncombe Park were 2-0 up when Andrew Souter scored for the second successive week. A left-wing corner was partially cleared, and Souter, on the edge of the penalty area, controlled the ball before unleashing a powerful shot into the top corner.
Ian Whittaker scored for Slingsby after 75 minutes with a well-struck shot. Duncombe Park added their third and final goal when substitute Brian Connor set up fellow substitute teenager Matthew Petch, who scored his first-ever senior goal for the club to book his side a place in the quarter-finals.
