Science to the rescue?

INNOVATIONS to help farmers and growers have received awards in this year's Science Into Practice Competition.

First prize went to a high-speed cell sorter from Cogent that can sort out sperm - after collection and before freezing - into male and female sperm. This would enable farmers to predetermine the sex of calves.

Second place was awarded to a seed drill machine from Zero Till which can sow any combinable crop into the stubble and chopped straw of the previous crop.

An energy reduction device for use in glass houses from Solar Housing Design and Build was judged third. Ventilated cool air is blown across the internal surface of the glass, thus reducing the temperature difference between inside and outside air to slow the rate at which heat is lost.
