First top ten finish for Dyson

A GUTSY performance in the final round, played in very strong winds, enabled Malton's Simon Dyson to clinch his first top-ten finish of the season in the South African Open at the tricky East London course.

Rounds of 69, 72, 69 and 75 for a three-under total of 285 guaranteed Dyson a cheque of around £10,000 and moved him up to 41st place in the European Order of Merit.

Playing close to the top of his game, after working hard with coach Peter Cowan, Dyson has also moved himself up to 88th in the Ryder Cup points table, and that without the benefit of any points earned last year.

Meanwhile, close friend Justin Rose missed a makeable putt on the final green and the chance to force a play-off for the second week in a row. His cheque for £78,321, however, when added to last week's winnings of £57,500, means that Rose has already secured his card for next season and makes him a very strong contender for Sam Torrance's team come September.

The eventual winner was 47-year-old Zimbabwean Mark McNulty, whose final round 71 gave him an eight-under total of 280 and his 16th European Tour victory.
