Witty reposte the highlight

Old Malton 4 Doncaster 1

EVEN though the game had no Gaelic flair or Italian genius, it wasn't any dour Yorkshire affair either; Rob Witty's second goal was more Rio de Janeiro than Ryedale.

Old Malton have put themselves in with an outside chance of promotion, but will need to win their remaining games, starting with second-place York on Saturday.

Andy Harvey opened the scoring against the visitors with a neat shot under the keeper. Then followed the second from Witty, which was a stunner.

Doncaster lost possession and Harvey picked up the ball on the halfway line. He slid it through to Mark Welford who in turn threaded a pass through for Witty to guide the ball home.

Old Malton dominated the majority of the first half but let Doncaster back in with a neat goal worked from a penalty corner.

Both teams lost their way early in the second half but the game was put beyond doubt when Harvey got number three as Doncaster dallied, and Will Tindall stooped in at the far post to make it 4-1.

Old Malton have several vital games coming up, with a game against table-toppers Sheffield Bankers in two weeks, and away to second-placed York on Saturday.

Good news is that Old Malton are back to full strength as Paul Coates returns from injury. Veteran Chris Thackray took over central defensive duties against Doncaster, and played as if born for the role. Phil Preston marks his first team debut against York, having impressed in the second team all year.
