Cricket: Westow's Mark Earle gives an upper-class display
Updated 3:51pm Wednesday 9th July 2014 in Sport
WESTOW skipper Mark Earle made the most of a superb batting strip at Clifton Alliance by blasting a century in division two of the HPH York Vale Cricket League.
He struck a superb 101 and with fellow opener Andy Welford making 37, Westow were able to post a formidable 238-7.
York-based Clifton were always behind the asking rate as Jamie Smith 3-37 and Ryan Boyd (3-50) struck at regular intervals. The home side finished on 153-9 as Westow recorded a healthy victory.
Malton & Old Malton also travelled to York at the weekend, losing their division three game at Acomb by 47 runs. Malt reduced Acomb to 59-5 but a big partnership between Andrew Jaques (58) and Farath Ansar (42) got them up to 178 all out by tea. Steve Oldfield bowled superbly for Malton with 5-21 from 11.3 overs.
However, Malton’s batsmen were not up to the task, Dougie Bentley (32) being the chief run-maker, in their reply of 132 all out.
Malton’s second string gained the maximum 30 points after division four rivals Thorp Arch & Boston Spa could not raise a side and conceded.
Stamford Bridge were well beaten by neighbours Pocklington who dominated from start to finish to win by 112 runs.
Thixendale will have to seek re-election at the Vale League annual general meeting after conceding their third match of the season.
They could not muster a side for the first division trip to North Cave and remain marooned at the foot of the table – a far cry from last season when they won the division two title.
