SEWERBY gained their first Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League premier division victory of the season to move off bottom place.

In defeating York by five wickets, two Sewerby players had fine games with Russ Robinson taking 4-59 and then making 50, while Ben Dobson hit 85.

York made 208-8 thanks to sound batting by Sam Beales with 46, Keiron Bloor 45, Ben Horseman 39 and Matt Hodson, who made 38. Dobson and Robinson took command in a stand of 102 to thwart the efforts of Ben Atkinson who closed with 3-38.

Second-placed Easingwold were held to a draw at Studley Royal but still took a valuable 26 points to keep them in touch.

There were runs from Martin Piercy with 58, Steve Piercy 40 and James Postill 29 as Easingwold totalled 194-7. Rob Mackle responded with 38 but, with Stephen Piercy taking 3-37 and Rich Lindsay 3-32, Studley were pegged to 152-8.

Woodhouse Grange clocked up their seventh win to increase their lead – but only by two wickets in a bowler dominated encounter with Hull Zingari at Elvington.

When Hull batted first, their batsmen struggled as Steve Burdett took 5-14 and Dave Suddaby 3-23. Only Chris Clark, with 22, showed any resolve.

Matt Bunn made serious inroads into the reply with 6-45. Tom Young struck 41 as his team mates faltered and it was left to Burdett to clinch the win with an unbeaten 23.

One of the day’s top-scoring games was at Dunnington where the hosts slipped to bottom place after losing heavily to Sheriff Hutton Bridge despite posting 224-5.

This was based on a 119-run stand between Jack Bolam and Adam Sutcliffe, who had made 52 when he was dismissed. Bolam went on to make 82 before falling in the penultimate over.

Earlier Kev Bradley, with 32, and Dan Barrett 25, had made good runs.

The Bridge reply was given a sound start in a tie reduced to 47 overs under the new rule. Openers Paul Oldfield and Dave Bradshaw posted a century stand before the latter fell for 60.Oldfield moved on to 79 before being the second of the two wickets to fall.

Leading run scorer Adam Fisher took his tally past the 400 mark with an undefeated 68 as the Bridge won with overs to spare.
