‘Chin up, lads,’ says Pickering Town boss Jimmy Reid

JIMMY REID says his shell-shocked Pickering Town troops have to knuckle down and “get on with it” as they target an end to a three-match losing run, writes Peter Martini.
The Pikes fell 2-0 at home to Garforth Town in the Northern Counties East League premier division on Tuesday night, making it 11 goals conceded in three outings since banging in 20 themselves in their previous four matches.
The midweek loss was not nearly as bad as Saturday’s 6-2 FA Vase reverse to Crook Town, though, and Reid – who is looking to make further reinforcements given the injuries in the ranks – is hoping for a quick upturn in fortunes at home to Liversedge tomorrow.
“We lost a few decent players to injury and we didn’t get that bit of luck,” said Reid of the Garforth game.
“We deserved nothing against Crook but I think we deserved a draw on Tuesday, but we have to get on with it. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We had a bad start last year but then had a great run. We need to get a win under our belts tomorrow and then we get ten days off to regroup before our next match.”
There is some good news on the injury front as Liam Salt’s knee problem is not as bad as first thought – he is now expected back in six to eight weeks, rather than being sidelined for the season.
Liam Shepherd could also return this weekend, but Tom Adams and Jon Heads are still ruled out.
In the meantine, Reid has targeted three new signings as he looks to strengthen again, specifically his defence and midfield.
“I’m optimistic of getting at least two,” he said without giving a clue as to who or from which clubs.
“The news about Liam Salt is also good – we thought he’d be out all year so to get him back in a couple of months will be a bonus.
“We need to get our chins up and get on with things, get a win and then look to kickstart our season.”
