A NORTON teenager is to spend 10 weeks on a development programme helping people in need overseas.

Emily Keal, is volunteering with International Citizens Service (ICS), a programme for young people aged 18-25 that helps developing countries who have asked for support.

The 18-year-old is travelling to Togo in West Africa at the end of January to work in the in slums and orphanages in the capital city of Lomé.

Emily said this would include providing healthcare to those with HIV and AIDS.

"I’ll be working alongside volunteers from the UK and the country I am volunteering in, on a project developing and strengthening young people’s skills and educating them," she added.

"ICS works with communities that have specifically requested their help. It also aims to inspire young people in the UK and overseas to become active citizens who are passionate about long term community development."

Emily said that as part of the programme she had been asked to raise £800.

" I have been extremely lucky, as Malton and Norton Rotary donated me a huge £500 and the Lady Lumley's Foundation gave a generous £250," she added.

" I received a £100 donation from the Ramesh Dewani Foundation and then £100 in individual donations and online donations on my JustGiving page, so I'd like to say a huge thank you to anyone that has supported me so far."

Emily said she was taking part because she believed that where you were born should not affect the opportunities that are offered to you.

"ICS is a fantastic organisation - without it I wouldn't be able to help young Togolese people improve the justice system, and educate them on important health issues," she added.

"These are two things which are necessary for a sustainable future - education and free healthcare is something in Britain we often take for granted. I want everyone to have equal assess to these simple benefits."

Emily said that as ICS was run by the Department of International Development, all the money raised would go to a valuable programme.

"We are asked to spread the word about ICS as part of the programme," she added.

" Therefore, when I return I will be going into local schools and groups to speak about my experience.
