COUNT the different expressions on this formal royal picture with a difference - it has won The Press and Gazette & Herald photographer Frank Dwyer national recognition.

And you can help him win a greater prize.

His photo of Princess Anne with members of 2nd Signals Regiment has been shortlisted in the News Media Association Royal Rota competition.

He took it during her visit to Imphal Barracks on March 29 to honour the regiment's contribution to humanitarian causes including its efforts in raising almost £160,000 for charity in 2015.

Frank said: "I was just sizing up the picture of Princess Anne and the regiment when she suddenly waved. No-one knew why until we saw her helicopter in the air. It caused great amusement."

Only the best royal photos of the thousands taken by members of the media every year are selected for the competition.

Members of the public will have the deciding say in who wins in five categories, including Regional/Local Newspaper Rota Photo of the Year and overall Rota Photo of the Year. This year, there is a special election photo category.

Just go onto the association's website newsmediauk.org/Royal-Rota-Photography-Competition-2017, look at the pictures displayed there, click on your favourite and vote.

We hope, of course, that you will chose Frank's. It's certainly our favourite.
