BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service at All Saints on Sunday will be morning prayer using the Book of Common Prayer at 8am. It will be taken by the vicar. The next Messy Church for children and their families will be from 4pm to 6pm on Saturday, September 10 at Hutton Buscel Village Hall. It is open to everyone from the Upper Derwent area.

Refurbishment - Brompton Village Hall kitchen has been refurbished by volunteer committee members during August. The first Village Volunteers community lunch of the autumn season will be on Wednesday, September 21.

CROPTON

Village hall - The classic car and motor cycle rally held in the grounds of the village hall on Sunday raised £1,425 for hall funds. Cars and motor cycles turned out in large numbers and filled the grounds. Homemade refreshments were in demand and stalls including bric-a-brac, books, tombola, raffle and a competition were all kept busy. The many helpers have been thanked with a special mention to the event organisers, Angela and Graham.

FARNDALE

Show time – Farndale Show will be held on Bank Holiday Monday, August 29 from10am. Entry is £4 for adults, £1 for children and free for under fives.

Calendar – The new Farndale calendar, priced £6, will be launched at Farndale Show with an offer of two for £10. The calendar is produced by local photographers and all profits go towards the village hall rebuilding fund. After the show the calendar will be available from the usual outlets.

HELMSLEY

Duck race - The Helmsley branch of the RNLI will be holding its annual duck race on Helmsley Beck, on Bank Holiday Monday, August 29. Ducks will be on sale in the Market Place all day and the race starts at 3pm. The winner will receive £40, second £20, third £10 and the last duck £5. Phone 01439 770678 for further details.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz – There will be a family quiz at The Crown Inn on Sunday, September 4 at 8.30pm. Entry is £1 per person. The winners will receive a voucher to spend at The Crown Inn. All proceeds will go to St Chad’s Church.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Exhibition - There will be a Past and Present exhibition in All Saints Church from Saturday, September 3 to Wednesday, September 7. It will be open daily from 10am until 3pm except Sunday when it will be open from noon until 3pm. A preview evening will be held on Friday, September 2 at 7pm when wine and nibbles will be served. If anyone has any historical photographs or documents of events which took place in Kirkbymoorside, the organisers of the exhibition we would be grateful if they could have them on loan. Manor Close – here will be a domino drive at the centre today (Wednesday) at 7.30pm.

Midnight Junction – Entertainment will be provided by midnight Junction at the Moorside Bar & Club on Saturday, starting at 8.30pm.

St Catherine’s Hospice - The recent coffee morning in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice raised £150.45 and the sponsored knit raised £648. There will be a cake stall, raising funs for the hospice, at Towler’s Arch today (Wednesday) from 9am.

Amesty International - The Kirkbymoorside group will meet on Thursday, September 8 at 1.30pm in the Meeting House, West End.

MALTON

Flower club - An extra event was scheduled for Malton and District Flower Club this month when a party of members enjoyed day trip to Carlisle. This took the form of a three-course luxury lunch with wine and flower day held in the penthouse of international demonstrator, Derek Armstrong. The demonstrations showcased Derek’s artistic talents. The creation of the arrangements showed off both traditional and contemporary skills, sometimes including unusual materials available in the on-site shop, which stocked a range of flower arranging accessories. The next meeting is the AGM on Tuesday, September 20 at 1pm followed by a demonstration by Carys Harrison called Have Passport Will Travel. MARTON

Show - The annual Marton, Normanby and District Summer Show will be held in Marton Village Hall on Saturday from 2.30pm. There will be a raffle, tombola, cake and coffee, produce and craft classes. Entries must be admitted to the village hall between 10am and noon on the day. A new feature this year will be a bar and barbecue in the Community Area.

All money raised will be divided between the village hall, the new Community Area and the Gardening Club.

NAWTON

Bingo – There will be a prize bingo session in the village hall on Saturday, September 3 at 7.30pm. It is in aid of hall funds OSGODBY Outing - Places are available on the coach for the afternoon trip arranged by the Community Association to Helmsley on Wednesday, September 7. The coach will leave the community centre at 1pm and return at 5pm. The charge is £5 and bookings can be made on the list at the centre or by phoning Moira Audsley on 01723 658422.

Historical aircraft - A coach trip has been arranged by Scarborough Historical Aircraft Club to Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster, to see the Vulcan bomber and its new companion, the record-breaking Canberra bomber. The outing on Wednesday, September 28 is open to anyone and the cost of £25 and includes a buffet lunch. PICKERING

Flower club - Pickering and District Flower Club will hold a meeting tonight (Wednesday) at 7.30pm at the WRVS Hungate Centre. It will be a practice night entitled Exchange Containers.

Open show - The first Pickering and District Horticultural Society Open Show will be held on Sunday in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill. Classes will include flowers, vegetables, plants, children’s section, handicrafts, cookery and floral art. Admission is by donation at the door. The show will be open from 1pm to 4.30pm. Exhibits can be staged between 7pm and 9pm on Saturday evening or between 8am and 10am on the morning of the show. Entries must remain in place until 4.30pm on the day of the show. The entry fee is 30p per class, but free for children’s classes. Judging will take place at 10am. There will also be a tombola and teas will be served in the afternoon. Summer gala - Ryedale Sports Club will be holding a summer family gala on Sunday from 11am to late afternoon at its sportsfield in Thornton Road. Attractions include a bouncy castle, mini-sports tournaments, face painting, tombola, raffle, barbeque and bar. Entry is free.

Quiz - There will be general knowledge quiz at the Bay Horse, Market Place on Sunday at 7.30pm.

Weekly draw - Last week’s main prize of £75 in the Pickering Town FC Weekly Draw was not won with the numbers 6, 26 and 31. This week’s draw will be doubled to £150. Domino drive – There will be a domino drive organised by Pickering Cricket Club at the Recreation Club tomorrow (Thursday) at 7.30pm.

Tribute act – There will be a Roy Orbison tribute evening at the Kirk Theatre, Hungate, on Saturday at 7.30pm.

Beck isle Museum – This month there are several different activity days at Beck Isle Museum. There are flight and aviation days up to and including this Saturday. Next week there will be bugs and beasties sessions and from Monday, August 29 to Sunday, September 4 there will be paper crafts event. A rural craft day will be held on Wednesday, August 24.

Ryedale shopper – Next month’s programme of journeys are on Thursday, September 8 to Beverley (price £6) and Thursday, September 22 to Scarborough (£5). PEEMS - There will be a meeting of the Pickering Experimebtal Engineering and Model Society held at the WRVS Hungate Centre on Wednesday, September 7 at 7pm.

Farmers’ market – The monthly farmers’ market will be held in the Market Place, on Thursday, September 1 from 8.30am.

RILLINGTON

Charity barbecue - A gourmet barbecue picnic in aid of Parkinsons UK will be held in the garden at the Fleece Inn from 6pm on Saturday, followed by a night of classic 60s, 70s and country music from 8.30pm Quiz time - Mike Williams is hosting a charity quiz in aid of Bloodwise (formerly Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research) in the Fleece Inn at 8pm on Friday, September 9. Entry is £12 per team of four and includes a hot supper of pulled pork. Prize time - Kath Samples presented the prizes at a progressive whist drive held in Woodlands Community Centre. A raffle was also held.

SEAMER

The Yorkshire Pelargonium & Geranium Society will meet at Seamer & Irton Memorial Hall on Sunday at 2pm. John Ellis from Stockton on Tees, an expert on growing cacti and succulents will give an illustrated talk. Phone Ron Ward, the society’s secretary, on 01723 355656 for more details.

St Martin's Church - The Rev Richard Firth presided and preached at the 9.30 service of Holy Communion. Jim Baird assisted with the distribution of Holy Communion, Lynn Cross and Dot Francis were the sidespeople and Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano. Clare Firth and Sue Johnson served refreshments after the service. The vicar, the Rev Andrew Moreland, led the 11am service of modern worship and preached on Luke’s account of Jesus’ healing of the crippled woman, which was read by Tim Cremer. Chris Bray led the intercessions and the sung worship was led by John Grice (guitar) with Becky Cremer (vocals), Chloe Proctor (guitar), Sue Grice (base) and John Taylor (drums). Liz Cremer ran the Sunday Club with Elizabeth Bradley, Jeff Fiedler was the sidesperson and Wendy Haslam served refreshments after the service.

Methodists - The preacher at Sunday’s service was Nikki Warner. The vestry steward was Jan Blower, Doreen Lawson was the organist and the welcomer was Margaret Neave who also took the collection. Bible readings were given by Bob Jackman who read from Luke’s gospel and Denise Earnshaw who read from Hebrews. The preacher next week at 10.30am is Janette Biltcliffe. The concert on Saturday is an organ recital by Richard Heal and entertainment by Seamer Singing for Fun Group. The concert starts at 7.30pm and the entry charge of £6 includes a light supper.

SHERBURN

Community Club – The annual fun day on Sunday will be held from noon when the bar will open. Attractions including Ryedale Rescue fun dog show, table top sale, rides , grand raffle, tombola, craft stall, cake stall, vintage tractors, falconry show, face painting, barbecue, tug-of-war, ball pool, crazy golf and more. Live music will be provided by Fireball from 4pm. There will be an auction of cricket and race day tickets during the break. Entry to the fun day is free.

Car boot - The village hall committee will be holding its annual fund-raising car boot sale on the playing fields in West Garth from 1pm to 4pm on Bank Holiday Monday, August 29. Sellers will have access from 12.30pm. It costs £3 for cars and £5 for vans. There will be refreshments available and a tombola.

Letters draw - The letters drawn in Sherburn FC’s weekly draw on Saturday were D L W. As there was no winner next week’s prize fund will be £180.

Methodist news - Sunday worship was conducted by the minister, the Rev Denise Free who spoke of God’s love. The congregation were welcomed to chapel by Christine Pickard and Ray Pickard was the offertory steward. The organist was Janet Magee and Luke Heron operated the audio visual equipment. After the service refreshments were enjoyed in the hall. The Holy Communion service next Sunday will be led by the Rev Martin Calver.

St Hilda’s Church - The next service at St Hilda’s will be Holy Communion on Sunday led by the Rev Joe Kinsella.

SNAINTON

St Stephen’s - As part of the church’s on-going fundraising for a new roof and associated works, the next event is a performance by the award-winning Felling Male Voice Choir on Saturday, September 10 at 7pm in the church. Based in Felling, near Gateshead, more than 40 of its members are in Scarborough for the weekend and have very offered to give this performance. Tickets are £10 in advance from Angela Howgate, phone 01723 859843, or Jane Williams, phone 01723 859130. It includes light refreshments. Tickets can also be bought on the door for £12.

WI- Snainton WI will return from its summer break with a meeting in Snainton Village Hall on Tuesday 6th September at 7.30pm. The speaker will be Anthea Firth demonstrating Willow Work, visitors most welcome.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Methodist Church - The Methodist Church will be open for the Scarecrow Festival on Saturday and Sunday when tea, coffee and biscuits will be served. The Ladies Group will meet at 7.30pm on Thursday, September 1 when Mrs P Towler will talk about the history of plant medicine. A harvest social evening will be held on Saturday, September 3, starting at 7pm when Yorkshire dialect specialist Adam Collier will provide the entertainment. It will be followed by a bring and share supper. Harvest services continue on Sunday, September 4 at 10.30am, led by Noel Smith. Alison Wragg from Martin House Children's Hospice will be at the coffee break on Tuesday, September 6 from 10am to 11-30am with Christmas cards.

Bridge club - Tim Johnson and Enid Watson won the meeting on Monday, August 15 with 54 per cent. Second were Janet Sutor and Sue Shuttleworth with 53.2 per cent.

Parish council - The next meeting will take place in the Hill Memorial Institute on Tuesday, September 6 at 7.30pm.

WOMBLETON

Domino drives - There will be a domino drive in the village hall on Saturday at 7.30pm and on Wednesday, September 7. Both events are to raise funds for the village hall Harvest festival – The village hall will host the harvest festival on Friday, September 23 at 7.30pm.
