APPLETON-LE-MOORS

History walk - A guided history walk, which was part of the North York Moors National Park Authority’s Breath of Fresh Air programme, was undertaken by nine visitors. The walk was led by Jim Hall and supported by Mike Winterflood. The village hall was open for the visitors to look at the History Group archive and watch a 15-minute slide show before the walk.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Annual show - The Annual Gardening Club Show was held at Sawdon Village Hall and a colourful display was put together by the members. Several first prizes were awarded to David Mudd, Stephen Spencer, Louise Thompson, Tony Stockill, Natalie Wood, Chris Evans, Joan Evans and Suzanne Carr. David Mudd carried off the Brompton and District Gardening Club Trophy for the most points in the vegetable classes, the James Mason Memorial Cup for the best exhibit in the vegetable classes and the Tankard for the most points in the fruit section. First prizes winners in the floral section were Joan Evans, Louise Thompson, Tony Stockill, Marcia Squibb, Stephen Spencer, Suzanne Carr, Wendy Banner, Elaine Mudd and Ingrid Ashman, who also won the J B Bielby Cup for the most points in the section. Wendy Banner was awarded the David Jeffels Cup for the best exhibit and Louise Thompson carried off the Dean’s Garden Rose bowl for most points in the floral art section. Ingrid Ashman had several placings in the cookery section which gained her the Zillah Holmes Memorial Vase for the most points. Other first prize winners included Anne Tidd, Di Ford, Dorothy Stockill, Julia Spencer, Fema Barnes, Marcia Squibb, Hannah Wallace, Sandra Harrison, Jemima Wallace and Elaine Mudd. Marcia Squibb was awarded the Jenny Patterson Salver for the best cookery exhibit. The winners in the children’s section were Abigail Mudd, Jessica Mudd, Esther Wallace, Matilda Wallace, Grace Barrie, Bella Hargreaves. The Ravensberg Cup for the most points went to Esther Wallace. In the photography section, Stephen Spencer won the Max Payne Trophy for the most points from a member of the Gardening Club. Paul Kyle won the Peter Barker Trophy for the most points by a non-member. The supreme champion awards for the most points scored in the whole show went to Stephen Spencer who was presented with the Win Harrison Memorial Bowl. The Frank Harrison Memorial Salver for the most points by a new member was won by Wendy Banner. The Justine Beak Trophy for most points won by a new member went to Janice Burley.

Fete - The church fete on Sunday, August 7, raised £2,140 for general church funds plus £57.67 for the fabric fund. A fun dog show was held for the first time and was judged by local vet Sarah Hunter. Prize winners were: Dog with the best trick: Ruby Kendall and Molly, Best child handler: Abigail and Jessica Mudd and Lucy; Dog most like its owner: Tony Norwood and Eric; Dog judge would most like to take home: Debbie Gillard and Stanley; Overall champion: Tony Norwood and Eric. Prizes were donated by Cundall and Duffy veterinary practice and Glaves the butchers. The winner of the time for the duck race was Val Baxter. The first duck home was Pauline, (bought by Sue Cook, who also had the last duck home, Dot. Raffle prizes were donated by Glaves the butcher, the Forge Tearooms and church members. Many people from the village and surrounding area helped to put up marquees, run the stalls and serve teas. The event was hosted by Clare and Nick Evans in the gardens of the Manor House.

Church - The service on Sunday at All Saints will be Holy Communion at 9.30am taken by the vicar.

BULMER

Bridge club - North/South winners at the meeting on Thursday, August 11 were Lesley and Arthur Conner with 59.per cent. Second were Angela and Ian Barnett with 58.6 per cent. Thelma Hardware and Charlie Chambers won East/West with 67.9 per cent. Jill Oxendale and Sheila Johnson were second with 58.6 per cent.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Gift day - All Saints Church’s gift day will be held today (Wednesday). The collection point is outside Age UK charity shop from 8.30am to 1.30pm.

Camera Club - Members of the Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Clubwill meet at 6pm tomorrow (Thursday) for an outdoor photo shoot at the Castle Howard Arboretum.

Bridge club - Sue Pearson and Steve Lonsdale won North/South at the meeting on Tuesday, August 9, with 59.6 per cent. Second were Anne Smith and Graeme Matthew with 56.per cent. East/West winners were George Goodall and Frank Bailey with 65.9 per cent. Second were Judith O'Donnell and David Whitehead 58.1 per cent.

Live acts – Tanya Turner will be performing at the Moorside Bar & Club on Friday. The following Friday the entertainment will be provided by Midnight Junction. Both acts start at 8.30pm.

St Catherine’s Hospice – The coffee morning held by the St Catherine’s Hospice support group raised £150.45 and the sponsored knit a further £648. The next fund raising events are the street collection today (Wednesday) with the evening domino drive at Manor Close today at 7.30pm and a cake stall at Towlers’ Arch way on Wednesday, August 24 from 9am.

KIRKDALE

Quiz sheets – Summer quiz sheets to raise funds for St Gregory’s Minster, Kirkdale and St Hilda’s, Beadlam are available from either church or the usual outlets. The theme of the quiz is film titles. Quiz sheets are £1 each and the first three all-correct solutions drawn will win prizes of £15, £10 and £5. The closing date for entries is Saturday, September 10.

NAWTON

Club draw – The results of the Beckett Recreation Ground 100 Club Draw for July were: 1The Ridley family, number 51, £50; 2 J Bulmer, number 146, £30; 3 M Bryant, number 136, £10; and 4 E Cook, number 50, £10.

OSGODBY

In Bloom - The monthly meeting of the In Bloom group was held in the community centre with secretary Gill Sowman presiding. Present were Bryan Bolton, treasurer; Bronwen Goodwin, Vi Carley and Margaret Hodgson. Sheila Johnson of Scarborough Borough Council’s parks and countryside services has awarded good garden certificates to the residents of 19 Redcliffe Close, 4 Stuart Close, 10 Hawson Close, 16 Hawson Close, 19 Osgodby Hall Road, 27 Osgodby Hall Road, 33 Osgodby Hall Road, 50 Bradworth Drive, 10 Seafield Avenue and the Fenton Close Planters. Thanks were expressed to those who had bark-mulched the triangle and to everyone who has helped with watering the beds and tubs. The two sunken areas on the village green have been relevelled with compost from the discarded damaged tubs and reseeded. The remaining six tubs have been painted. Work is continuing on the boat bed and the general maintenance of the displays throughout the village.

Bingo - A bingo evening was run at the community centre with Moira Audsley and Janet McNamara as callers and cashiers and Margaret Rogers and Christine Hastie as checkers. Refreshments were provided by Margaret Bogg and Mrs Rogers. The raffle was run by Mrs McNamara and the flier was run by Joan Davies. People from all areas are invited to attend this social event at 7.15pm on Mondays.

PICKERING

Stape Silver Band - After two successful concerts on the green at Thornton-le-Dale during July and August, Stape Silver Band is preparing for its annual concert at the Kirk Theatre, Pickering. The theme is Last Night at the Proms and will include music by composers including R Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Hubert Parry, Henry Wood, Edward Elgar and Arthur Sullivan. The cost of tickets is £8 (£6 for concessions) and they are available from the Kirk Theatre. The band will also be playing at Smiddy Hill during the War Weekend on Saturday, October 15, starting at 2pm. The band will be having a cake stall on Saturday, September 3 in the market place during the morning. The band has produced a Yorkshire quiz sheet which is available from many shops in Pickering and Malton. The sheets must be returned by September 30. Three prizes are available. This quiz is sponsored by Malton-based McClarron Insurance. The answers will be published during October. The band will play at the Christmas lights switch on in Pickering and will be performing in the church on the 50th anniversary of its fundraising for Yorkshire cancer on Sunday, December 18. The concert will feature Christmas music including carols and the guest artist will be local singer/songwriter David Swann.

Film festival - The film festival at the Methodist Church last week was well supported and donations will go towards the building improvement fund. The monthly family cinema season at the church will start on Saturday, October 1 at 6.30pm. Doors open at 6pm and admission is free, but donations towards costs are welcome. Refreshments will be available. Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Tribute night - The Vicky Jackson tribute act to Katy Perry and Pink at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, on Saturday starts at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £17.50 which also includes a barbeque and disco and are available from the Recreation Club, phone 01751 473317 or Dunning Butchers phone 01751 472627.

Summer gala - Ryedale Sports Club will be holding a summer family gala on Sunday, August 28 from 11am to late afternoon at its sportsfield in Thornton Road. Attractions include a bouncy castle, mini-sports tournaments, face painting, tombola, raffle, barbeque and bar. Entry is free.

Model exhibition - The annual model railway exhibition provided by the Scarborough and District Modellers will be held in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill, on Saturday and Sunday. It will run from 10am to 5pm on the Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday. There will be working layouts, demonstrations, trade support and refreshments. Admission is £5 for adults, concessions £4.50 and children free if under 14 and accompanied by an adult.

Bingo - The Recreation Club, Mill Lane, holds bingo sessions every Thursday starting at 7.30pm.

Weekly draw - Last week’s main prize of £225 in the weekly Pickering Town FC draw was won by Antony Ward. The winning numbers were 32, 15 and 5. This week’s draw will be for £75.

Domino drives – Pickering Town FC will be holding a domino drive at the Recreation Club on Friday at 7.30pm. Admission is £1.50 and includes light refreshments. Pickering Cricket Club will hold a drive at the recreation Club on Thursday, August 25 at 7.30pm.

Tribute act – A Roy Orbison Tribute evening will be held at the Kirk Theatre on Saturday, August 27 at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale from the box office, phone 01751 474833, which is open on Tuesday’s from 11am to 1pm.

Coffee morning - Every Monday and Saturday coffee mornings are held at the Champley’s Yard headquarters of the Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale branch of the Royal British Legion from 10am to 12.30pm.

Beck isle Museum – This month there are several different activity days at Beck Isle Museum. There are flight and aviation days up to and including this Saturday. Next week there will be bugs and beasties sessions and from Monday, August 29 to Sunday, September 4 there will be paper crafts event. A rural craft day will be held on Wednesday, August 24.

Open show - The first Pickering and District Horticultural Society Open Show will be held on Sunday, August 28 in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill. Classes will include flowers, vegetables, plants, children’s, handicrafts, cookery, and floral art. Admission is by donation at the door. The show will be open from 1pm to 4.30pm. Exhibits can be staged between 7pm and 9pm on the evening of Saturday, August 27 or between 8am and 10am on the morning of the show. They must remain in place until 4.30pm on the day of the show. The entry fee is 30p per class, but it is free to enter children’s classes. Judging will take place at 10am. There will be a tombola and teas will be served in the afternoon. RILLINGTON

Show time - Rillington and District Horticultural and Industrial Society's 93rd Annual Show will be held in the village hall on Saturday, September 10 when it will be open to the public from 2.30pm to 5pm. Schedules are available from local businesses and can be downloaded from Rillington and District Horticultural and Industrial Society’s Facebook page. There are almost 160 classes for all age groups including agricultural produce, vegetables, fruit, flowers, floral art, home produce, handicrafts, photography, woodwork, metalwork, art and children's classes. Non-residents of the area are now able to exhibit at the show providing they are members of the society. Membership is £2 per person and payable on completion of the show entry form. Entry forms must be returned to the show secretary on later than 8pm on Monday, September 5.

Quizzes - Seven teams playing for £56 in prize money took part in Mike Williams general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners were Team @ the Bar, second were 30, 32’s and third, after a tie-break with The Who, were Weaverthorpe Four. The £14 jackpot was won by The Who. Mike’s next quiz in the Fleece will be on Friday, August 26. Jennie's Sunday night quiz was won by Team @ the Bar.

Bingo - A prize bingo for Centre funds will be held in Woodlands Community Centre on Wednesday, August 24 with eyes down at 7.15pm.

SEAMER

St Martin's Church - The Rev Richard Firth led the 9.30am service of Holy Communion during which he baptised Ava and Willow Thornton, the daughters of Glenn and Emma Thornton. Richard’s talk centred on a story from The Wind in the Willows. Jean Donovan led the prayers and assisted with the distribution of communion. Doreen Livesey and Elizabeth Chapman were sidespersons and Clare Firth and Sue Johnson served refreshments. At the end of the service Doreen Livesey presented Ava and Willow with books of bible stories which were a gift from the Mothers’ Union. Kieron Middleton led the all-age service at 11am and gave a special welcome to the youngest person present, Rose Luke, who was less than two days old, who came with her mum and dad, Emma and Iain, and big sister Elsie. Kieron took as his theme the subject of prayer and based it around the Lord's Prayer, used by Jesus to teach his disciples. Kate Middleton had prepared a prayer tree and many people accepted the invitation to write prayers of intercession on leaves to place on it. The sung worship was led by Steve Raettig (keyboard) with Richard Fuller (guitar) and John Taylor (drums). Jean Fiedler was the sidesperson and Chris Bray and Wendy Haslam served refreshments after the service.

Methodists - The service on Sunday was taken by Rev Denise Free. The organist was Doreen Lawson, the vestry steward was Bert Blower and the welcomer was Margaret Harris. Margaret Neave gave the bible reading Jesus Welcomes Little Children and she also took the collection. During the service Graham and Jennifer Barnes brought their baby daughter Emily Ann to be baptised. The preacher next week at 10.30am will be Nikki Warner. There will be an organ recital by Richard Heal and a performance by Seamer Singing for Fun Choir on Saturday, August 27 at 7.30pm. Entrance fee £6 to include a light supper.

SHERBURN

Car boot - The village hall committee will be holding its annual fund-raising car boot sale on the playing fields in West Garth from 1pm to 4pm on Bank Holiday Monday, August 29. Sellers will have access from 12.30pm. It costs £3 for cars and £5 for vans. There will be refreshments available and a tombola.

Community Club – The annual fun day on Sunday, August 28 will be held from noon when the bar will open. Attractions including Ryedale Rescue fun dog show, table top sale, rides , grand raffle, tombola, craft stall, cake stall, vintage tractors, falconry show, face painting, barbecue, tug-of-war, ball pool, crazy golf and more. Live music will be provided by Fireball from 4pm. There will be an auction of cricket and race day tickets during the break. Entry to the fun day is free.

St Hilda’s Church - Barbara Grice led the morning worship when her theme was the contrast between the two gardens important to Christian faith – the Garden of Eden and the Garden at Golgotha. Keith Usher read the lesson and acted as sidesperson with Angela Holdsworth. Coffee was served at the end of the service by Jean Usher and helpers. The next service at St Hilda’s will be Holy Communion on Sunday, August 28, led by Rev Joe Kinsella.

Methodist news - The Bible study group met in the Chapel under the leadership of Janet Magee to continue with their study of John’s Gospel. The Tuesday coffee morning on August 23 will be a Big Brew event to promote the use of Fairtade goods. The Sunday worship was led by Rev Bob Whitfield. The stewards were Jean Brown and Sandra Cade. The welcomer was Christine Pickard and Ray Pickard was the offertory steward. Chris Cade played the organ and Christine Fenwick operated the audio visual equipment. After worship, coffee was enjoyed in the hall. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Rev Denise Free.

Letters draw – Sherburn FC’s letters draw on Saturday produced the letters L R X. As there was no winner next week’s prize fund will be £120.

WESTOW

Art exhibition - The annual village art exhibition will be taking place in the village hall on Friday, from noon until 4pm and 7pm until 9pm and on Saturday and Sunday between 10am until 4pm both days. Entry into the event is free. A lot of the exhibits will be for sale. Tea, coffee and home baking will be available throughout the exhibition. The proceeds from the exhibition will be used for the finishing touches to the cricket pavilion, together with the planting of bulbs, flowers and shrubs at the cricket ground.
