Snow has continued to fall over Malton and Norton.

A hail and snow storm around lunchtime caused disruption to routes around the towns with many vehicles struggling to negotiate hills.

Staff were also called out at Morrisons supermarket to help motorists up the slope to Castlegate.

At one point the traffic in the town was described as 'gridlocked' with difficult conditions for both motorists and pedestrians.

The Met Office said that this evening and overnight showers across the region should slowly die with most parts dry by midnight. Clear spells will lead to a widespread frost by morning, with a few icy patches possible. Minimum Temperature -3 °C.

After a cold start, Thursday morning should be mainly dry with some sunny spells. However, thickening cloud will bring outbreaks of rain and possible hill snow later in the day. Maximum Temperature 10 °C.

The outlook for Friday is windy with rain or showers and some hill snow. Sunny spells and occasional showers on Saturday, but more general cloud and rain expected on Sunday. Becoming less cold.
