RYEDALE enjoyed a right royal knees-up to celebrate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty The Queen.

Beacon-lighting, parties and bell-ringing were among the events organised to mark the special occasion.

A team of volunteers rang the bell at St John the Evangelist church, Welburn, 90 times, starting at noon last Thursday, with the Reverend Taff Morgan ringing the first 10 chimes.

In Malton, the Talbot Hotel hosted a beacon-lighting ceremony with its charity partner, The Encephalitis Society, with support from Malton and Norton Rotary Club. Charlotte Leeming, the BBC Look North presenter, lit the beacon.

The town crier, David Jackson, was also out to mark the Queen’s birthday, crying at different points around Malton.

Villagers in Leavening and Settrington also hosted their own beacon lighting ceremonies, while Huttons Ambo celebrated St George’s Day and the Queens 90th with a traditional party.

The residents of the Alba Rose care home in Pickering marked the Queen's birthday by holding a 'Right Royal Birthday Tea' in her honour.

Jo Yardy, who works at the home, said: “We would all like to thank the lovely people who came along to our 'Knit and Natter' sessions and helped us to make the red, white and blue bunting to decorate the house.”

At Helmsley Primary School pupils dressed in red, white and blue and enjoyed a 'street party' on the playground with cake and sandwiches followed by games.

A spokesman said: "It was a beautiful afternoon and they had a great time."
