A NEW initiative is being launched for blind and partially sighted people living in Ryedale.

Sight Support Ryedale, supported by funding from the Duke of York Community Initiative, is introducing a new Assistive Technology Group for local residents.

The group will start in May and the fortnightly sessions will enable blind and partially sighted people to become familiar with tablet and smart phone devices, including Apple and Android systems.

As a peer support group it is intended that members will learn, together, about the range of apps and software options which are available to assist them in their everyday lives.

Sight Support Ryedale is also looking for volunteers, from the community, who have an interest in technology and who would be willing to give some time to support the group.

Julie Atkinson, Chief Officer at Sight Support Ryedale said: “Sight Support relies on many volunteers who kindly donate their time during activities and day trips, including our regular social meetings.

"For the technology group we are looking for people who have experience with Apple and Android devices and an interest in supporting our members to gain confidence in using tablets and smart phones.”

Anyone living in the Ryedale area who is blind or partially sighted, including those not registered, can join Sight Support Ryedale to access the various activities and support which the charity offers.
