A RARE 18th century clock which was made in Malton has been brought back to the town by a local antique dealer.

The longcase clock, which is seven foot, six inches tall, was built by clockmaker John Richardson in 1704.

Derek Garraton, from antique shop, 3 The Shambles, said it had been bought at an auction in Lincoln.

"It has the manufacturers name on it and most be one of the earliest recorded clocks in Malton," he added.

"The clock was probably made for a family with money and is a beautiful piece."

Mr Garraton said the clock and been full serviced and was in good working order.

"This is only the fifth Malton clock I have had in the shop in the last 20 years and certainly the oldest one," he added.

"It would be nice if the clock could be bought by someone who could put it where members of the public could see it."

Mr Garraton said: "There has been some interest in it, and I really hope the clock stays in Malton."
