FIVE men were arrested as part of Operation Hawk, the crackdown on travelling criminals, after police were alerted to a fish and chip shop burglary.

North Yorkshire Police were called to Bridge Street, Helmsley, at 3am on Sunday, and arrested two men at 5.30am.

A Nissan Qashqai which had been stolen from a property in Durham was also spotted by police officers on the south-bound A1(M) at 7.53am, and refused to stop.

Officers followed the vehicle into West Yorkshire, where it crashed, and arrested three men – aged 25, 19 and 19 – from the Crook area of County Durham after a chase on foot.

Kenneth Ross, 29, and Dale Watson, 21, both from County Durham, appeared before Scarborough magistrates on Monday charged with four burglary offences in Helmsley, including break-ins at a High Street pub, a business in Bondgate, and a garden shed in Carlton Road.

Both were remanded in custody to York Crown Court on September 29.
