Howsham Mill, near Malton, shortlisted for English Heritage Angel Award

Howsham Mill, near Malton, has been shortlisted for the English Heritage Angel Awards for the Best Rescue of a Historic Industrial Building or Site.

The mill, which was built by the owners of the nearby Howsham Hall in 1755, was transformed dramatically in 2003 to restore the building which can now be seen in its full gothic glory.

The Renewable Heritage Trust, which was formed in 2003 for the restoration, has given it a new lease of life and the mill is now used as an environmental education centre for groups and tourists. It also generates hydro-electricity and uses a unique Archimedes screw turbine, supplying the National Grid for the past four years now.

The Mill needs public votes to win the annual English Heritage Followers and Telegraph Readers’ Favourite Angel Award, founded by Andrew Lloyd Webber in 2011.

Tammy Whitaker, English Heritage Planning Director for Yorkshire said that being shortlisted for the award was down to the hard work and dedication of the volunteers who had given up hours of their time to help with the restoration.

She said: "The passion, perseverance and imagination of the volunteers that worked so hard to get an 18th century mill to supply electricity, are an inspiration to us all.

"Their dedication and determination ensures that together we can secure the future of sites highlighted on English Heritage's At Risk register."

Howsham Mill was also in the running to be crowned Best Environmental Project in the National Lottery Awards this year but narrowly missed out.

Those wanting to visit the Mill can see it in all its glory with a guided tour on Saturday, September 13 as part of this year's Heritage Open Day Weekend. There will be children's activities from 11-3pm and on Sunday, 14 there will be experts on hand to talk about the historical building techniques, geology of the site and hydro-power. The Mill will be open from 10am-4pm.
