A FASCINATING glimpse into the historic past of Malton's drink trade was on offer at a summer workshop.

Throughout the school holidays, a series of activities have been organised as part of the Terrific Trades exhibition at the Parish Rooms in Yorkersgate.

The joint venture between Malton Museum and the Woodhams-Stone Collection features displays on the business and commerce of the past, including brewing and haberdashery, and fascinating glimpses into shopping in the towns.

Margaret Shaw, from Malton Museum, said the display has been combined with the workshops featuring local trades and skills, such as making lemonade, pottery and sewing.

'Making it Fizz' looked at how drinks were made fizzy and participants got involved with making and tasting some drinks from the past inspired by the history of Malton's non-alcoholic drinks business.

“We have has some really good feedback to the workshops and will be looking at running more for the next exhibition,” she said.

"This time we have been testing the water and they have proved to be an added extra and encouraged different people through the door."

The Terrific Trades exhibition is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 10am to 4pm.

Entry is free, but donations are welcome towards the running costs of future exhibitions and activities.

The remaining workshop is “Twisting Threads” – creating decorative cords, braids and plaits on Friday, August 29.
