A 22-YEAR-OLD man has died following a crash on the A64.

Three men were in a blue Renault Clio which overturned and came to rest in a ditch off the eastbound carriageway near Tadcaster, yesterday afternoon.

One of the passengers in the car, a 22-year-old man from Scarborough, suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a 24-year-old man from Scarborough, suffered minor injuries in the incident. He was taken to York Hospital for treatment.

Another man, who was a passenger, was treated at Leeds General Infirmary for minor injuries sustained in the collision.

The crash did not involve any other vehicles. A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The road was closed to allow officers to examine the scene of the collision. It was reopened at around 8.40pm.

“Officers are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them with information.”

A spokeswoman for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service said one patient was taken by land ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary and another by land ambulance to York Hospital. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance helicopter was flown to the scene.

The accident happened between the junctions with the A659 and the A162.

The eastbound carriageway had been closed from the A1, with traffic diverted through Tadcaster.

There was queueing traffic between the A659 and A162.

The westbound carriageway was temporarily closed to allow the helicopter to land after the accident, which happened at about 3.25pm.

Anyone who can help officers with their inquiries is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 – select option 2 – and ask for Traffic Sergeant Hamish Halloway.
