NORTON Primary School will be closed tomorrow because of strike action.

The school is the only confirmed closure in Ryedale, although a number of others were expected to be shut across North Yorkshire.

Members of the NUT, GMB, Unison, Unite and fire service are involved in the strike over pay to public sector workers.

North Yorkshire County Council’s director of children and young people, Pete Dwyer, said: “No school will take the decision lightly to close. We have good working relationships with all our professional associations and every effort will be made to enable schools to remain open.”

In a letter to parents, Norton Primary headteacher Liz Parker said: “This action is not against the school, but is part of a national action about changes to pay and conditions of trade unions members.”

UNISON members who work at Ryedale District Council have also voted to take industrial action.

The council said it was not anticipating service closures but there may be a reduction in service provision or a delay in response. Changes to services will be detailed on the council’s website.
