PAINTINGS by an artist who produced his work on location at the former battlefields of the First World War have gone on show in Ryedale.

Nunnington Hall is commemorating the centenary of the war with an exhibition by landscape artist Robert Perry.

For the display, Mr Perry travelled to the battlefields in a mobile studio and created large paintings designed to communicate the devastation of the wartime landscape.

Mollie Dodd, general manager at Nunnington Hall, said: “It’s very exciting to welcome an artist of Robert’s calibre to Nunnington Hall as part of our successful annual exhibition programme. His paintings are highly evocative, enabling visitors to imagine the isolation and fear felt by those involved in the war.”

The exhibition will be accompanied by a First World War World War One centenary day on Sunday, June 29, when visitors will be able to join in with demonstrations of wartime activities such as rationing, butter-making and wash days.

There will be a music wagon playing wartime classics and regular talks from local lecturer Trevor Boag.

Members of the armed forces will be given free entry to the historic home on the day.

Robert Perry: Battlefields of World War One The exhibition runs at Nunnington Hall until Sunday, July 6.
