THIEVES stole several distress flares from a boat moored in Scarborough this week.

The devices are orange and about eight inches long, and were taken from a boat moored in the East Pier on Sunday.

North Yorkshire Police said some of the devices were discarded in the harbour, seafront and castle areas of the town, and he urged residents not to touch them, but to contact police if any are found.

Some of the stolen flares have already been recovered, including one device at Burr Bank in Scarborough on Bank Holiday Monday, which was taken away by army explosives specialists.

A 15-year-old boy and a 12-year-old boy, both from the Scarborough area, have been arrested in connection with the theft. They have been released on police bail while the investigation continues.
