LANGTON Primary School has welcomed a new headteacher.

James McGann joined the school from Westfield Primary School in Acomb, York, at the start of the summer term.

Originally a paramedic, Mr McGann retrained 13 years ago following a long-term ambition to work in education.

After a spell teaching in West Yorkshire he moved to York where he progressed to the position of deputy head while also supporting other schools in the area.

Mr McGann said: "I had always looked at becoming a teacher, particularly with primary age children who are amazing to work with - it is a really rewarding career."

The 38-year-old, who is married to Lucy and has two children, Lucy, aged seven and Will, who is five, said he was immediately attracted to Langton Primary and the local area.

"The school has gone through a challenging period and my first job is to get it back to being a 'good' school in the next year'," he added.

"The parents and children have been very welcoming and along with the new team on the governing body we will be looking at getting Langton Primary back to an outstanding school."

The new Chair of Governors, Stuart Simpson, he was delighted to welcome James to the school.

"I am sure that he will make a big difference to the way the school performs," he added.

" Some good work has already taken place but we need to move to the next level quickly and and with James as the headteacher I am confident that we will make rapid progress to good and ultimately achieve our aim which is to be an outstanding school."
